A kitchen knife is in general any knife that is intended to be used in food preparation. Kitchen knives can be made from a lot of different materials and there are also specialized knives that work better for specific tasks than the general-purpose knives.
Everyone that spends a lot of time in the kitchen should have a set of good kitchen knives. Good sharp knives make the food preparation a lot easier. You can check if you have good knives by putting the knife in your hand and simply check the balance, the grip and the sharpness of the blade.
There are many different types of kitchen knives out on the market. What most people need, to start with, is a basic knife set. A basic set can for example consist of the following knives:
- 4" Steak/paring knife
- 5" Utility knife
- 7" Cook´s knife
- 8" French cook´s knife
- 8" Sharpening steel
In most cases it is more economical to buy a set of kitchen knives than buying them separately. It is important that you have sharpening steel so you can keep your knives sharp. If your knives got wooden handle you should not clean them in the dishwasher. Knives with wooden handle should be cleaned by hand.
